Cilento – A Park by the Sea

Founded in 1991, the Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano is the second largest park in Italy ( 181,048 hectares ) and includes 82 towns, all in the province of Salerno . It stretches out along the Tyrrhenian sea in southern Campania and climbs up to the Appennine mountains.

Declared by Unesco a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997, it presents an impressive variety of natural environments and over 2000 registered botanical species, among which some endemic species such as the well-known “primrose of Palinuro”, that is also the Park’s logo.

The fauna is also rich, comprising animals like wild boar, foxes, badgers, dormice, wolves and the endangered otters as well as rare specimen of birds such as, the Audoin’s gull and the sea crow, the golden eagle and the peregrine falcon.

Still more important is the acknowledgement given to the Park in 1998 by Unesco as  a World Heritage site for its extraordinary “cultural landscape” and significant historical value, represented by its thick net of ancient boroughs and especially the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia.
