Sasso Marconi
Sasso Marconi is the beautiful gateway to Emilia-Romagna from Tuscany that combines nature, history, outdoor sports and gastronomy for a perfect vacation destination. Situated to the south of Bologna on the way to Florence, Sasso Marconi offers an abundance of day trips to such great cities as Bologna (15 minutes), Florence (1 hour) and Venice (2 hours), to great parks for hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking, to the Bolognese hills wine country and Etruscan and Roman archeological sites.
The name Sasso Marconi comes from the Medieval name of the massive cliff (Sasso di Giosina) that overlooks the point where the Setta and Reno rivers meet, and from Gugliemo Marconi, the inventor of the wireless telegraph. Etruscan objects have been found in this area and an aqueduct built in the first century B.C. to carry water to Bologna is, in some places, still functional.
The authentic stone farmhouses dotting the foothills of the Appenine Mountains provide vacationers with panoramic views of the hilly countryside, vineyards and even the nearby Tuscan landscape. Many farmhouses serve excellent meals made from their own farm produce, wine, livestock and fruits. The Natalia Farmhouse
is an excellent example of this tradition.
Throughout the Bologna and Modena areas are some of the most famous names in fast cars and motorbikes: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Ducati. If your tastes run more highbrow, Bologna boasts Europe `s oldest university and some 48 museums. This region is also known as the gastronomical capital of Italy with some of the most highly prized foods and wines in the country: Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Parma`s prosciutto ham, aged balsamic vinegar of Modena, filled tortellini and tortelloni, the famed Bolognese meat sauce for pasta, white truffles and the indigenous Pignoletto wine, the “King of the Colli Bolognesi” wines. The area abounds in great restaurants from family-run country trattorias to elegant urban dining.
