The area`s dedication to the natural traditions in farming ensure the highest-quality organic produce and livestock, which, in turn, result in country cuisine served in local farmhouses that will delight any gastronome. During a recent farmhouse lunch, we enjoyed a country gourmet meal with homemade ricotta and aged cheeses, antipasto with sausage, frittele alla salvia (fried sage bread), grilled farm vegetables, pork fillets in mushroom sauce, zucchini and cheese foccacia, a berry tart, and excellent wine and grappa made by the farmhouse owner, who is a sommelier. Excellent examples of this tradition can be found at the Angelica , Gelsomina and Liliana farmhouses in Colline di Caiazzo.

Tours In Colline di Caiazzo

Wine-making Tradition

The Colline di Caiazzo region has a strong wine-making tradition dating back to the colonization by the Greeks and later to the influx of Bourbon royalty in the 18th Century. Its hilly and mountainous terrain produces some of Italy`s finest grapes for a variety of excellent white and red wines.

Unique Olive Oil

This Mediterranean region is known for the cultivation of a native variety of olives known as tifata calatia or caiazzana producing an extra virgin olive oil that has unique characteristics: a sweet-flavored oil with a hint of almond. Caiazzo is part of the Associazione Nazionale Città dell`Olio (National Association of Oil Cities) whose mission is to protect and promote the ancient traditions of olive cultivation and the production of extra virgin olive oil.

Things to See

Highlights of nearby sights include:

The Royal Palace of Caserta (20 minutes). This is Italy`s grandest royal palace, a mammoth 18 th century masterpiece by the Neapolitan architect Luigi Vanvitelli that was built by the Bourbon kings to rival the Palace of Versailles in France. Like Versailles , the palace is surrounded by an immense park with long walkways, cascading waterfalls, impressive sculptures and a beautiful English garden.

Casertavecchia (15 minutes). A picturesque 13 th century medieval village clinging to the foot of Mount Virgo.

San Leucio (20 minutes). Royal Bourbon site that was transformed into a world-class silkworks production center by King Ferdinand IV.

S. Maria Capua Vetere . Imposing ruins of Campanian Amphitheatre (2 nd century A.D.), comparable in size to the Colosseum in Rome.

Capua . Museo Campano housing the celebrated 4 th century B.C. ā€œmatres matutaeā€, statues of women with children.

Naples (15 minutes). The principal city of Southern Italy and important center of history and art, filled with beautiful castles, churches, the grand 18 th century S. Carlo Theatre, and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale with a wealth of priceless art and artifacts, including those from Pompeii.

Pompeii (30 minutes).Ā Ancient city near Naples that was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius inĀ 79 A.D.Ā Beautiful archeological ruins including villas, mosaic courts, murals, baths, temples and a large ampitheatre connected by a grid of stone-paved streets.

Enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Italy`s lush countryside in stone farmhouses in the midst of vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards. The country life is anything but spartan with many properties appointed with lovely antiques and offering private swimming pools and access to tennis, biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Wonderful country restaurants that incorporate fresh local produce and herbs, regional wines and other specialties abound. We cover virtually all of Italy from the northern mountains surrounding the Aosta Valley to the South`s sun-splashed island of Sicily — not to mention such famous regions as Tuscany, Umbria and the Amalfi Coast in between. Consider using one of our restored country residences, from farmhouses and monasteries to castles and villas, as your base to do day trips to the city or surrounding countryside.
